A Year of Getting Slower, Then Two Clicks.
A Hemel Hempstead couple blamed their USB ports, because the Toshiba was only slower every month
. Then a fatal hardware error
came up in Windows, and there was nowhere left to point. A neighbour's laptop found it never appeared at all
, and now it will only spin, click twice and shut itself off
. Ten years of photographs of two children were inside.

Without the jargon.
Before a drive shows you anything it has private business to do: fetching calibration and adaptive tables from a reserved area of the platter. If the heads are too worn to read that area, the drive gets two goes — attempt, recalibrate, attempt again — and then shuts down rather than work from bad numbers. Those two goes are the two clicks. The year of slowing was the same wear arriving gradually, and the error box was Windows catching up with something the drive had been signalling for months.
The kit this job needed.
See how a job runs here →| Kit | Why it was used | What it gives us |
|---|---|---|
| DeepSpar Disk Imager 4 | Mapped the new stack head by head and fixed the order the surfaces were taken in | Maps the heads, then images each — resets, timeouts and power cycles controlled |
| PC-3000 Data Extractor | Ran the read passes, meeting each stall with a measured reset or power cycle | The PC-3000 imager, driven from the firmware side of the tool |
| R-Studio Technician | Brought the folder tree back out of the finished image | Copes with almost any file system; dependable array rebuilds |
What happened on the bench.
Take the noise as a signed statement
Two clicks, never three, then shutdown: that pattern points at the start-up read rather than ordinary work, which puts the first failure in the reserved tracks. Magnification agreed. There were no impact marks anywhere on the stack — only the smooth, even wear of heads that had flown for a very long time.
Fit a new head stack first
A donor stack from the same production family went in, the start-up read completed, the drive stayed up and identified itself. Mapping came immediately rather than later: after a slow decline the surfaces almost never wear evenly, and the map shows which of them still have strength left.
Copy straight away, best surfaces first
There is no second appointment with a drive this tired, so imaging started while the repair was fresh. The strong heads went at full rate first, the weak bands were left for slow passes at the end, and with the reserved area readable the platters copied cleanly nearly everywhere.
The outcome.
The image came whole and the recovery followed it: albums opened year by year before anything was signed off. The Toshiba has been retired. A drive that has used up its heads owes nobody a second career.

One lesson runs through the lot: cut the power, let us look for free, then decide with the facts in hand.
