Without the jargon.
That faint tick and the alarming knock of a desktop drive are the same movement heard at two volumes: the head stack sweeping for a reference it cannot find, retreating, sweeping again. Loudness is decided by things that care nothing for your files — how big the platters are, how heavy the chassis is, and in a Rugged, a rubber sleeve designed to absorb noise. There is no volume dial for severity. Each sweep is another pass across the surfaces holding the work.

What happened on the bench.
Handle a soft tick like a loud one
No power went near it again until the lid was off. What that revealed was a scaled-down version of the usual damage — sliders marked where they had touched down, platters showing almost nothing for it. He had tried two Macs and then stopped, and that decision is visible in how little harm there was.
Right head stack first; reads come later
Heads from a drive of the same family and manufacturing period were fitted, then surveyed. Every one read, though a single head trailed the others on the weak-read test, so it was pushed to the end and the strong heads started the imaging.
Rebuild the HFS+ catalogue the way HFS+ wants
HFS+ keeps the truth about a volume in its catalogue file, and getting that out of the image correctly is what separates an archive from a heap. Projects returned under their own names, filed by year, dates untouched — instead of thousands of orphans waiting to be sorted by hand.
The outcome.
Everything came back — twelve years of drawings and site photographs — checked by bringing the rebuilt volume up and opening a job from each end of the decade. Two attempts rather than twenty is why a complete result was available at all.
