A wedding videographer from Newport Pagnell was pulling fifteen years of ceremonies onto one drive when the Seagate stopped mid-transfer: it gave one beep and left the desktop

Without the jargon.
The beep is the diagnosis, near enough. It is a motor leaning on a pack it cannot turn, backing off, and trying again until it stops trying. Power was reaching the drive. Rotation was not. The broken seal was the bigger problem. Once someone else has been inside, nobody can judge the state of the surfaces from outside it, and a lab that offers to is guessing at your expense. What a lab can do is put the money down in writing first: assessment free, one fixed figure, the platter-damage exclusion said out loud rather than tucked into a footnote — and, because this one had to come apart, half of parts and labour before the work, the rest owed only if it succeeded.

Terms agreed before a screwdriver appears
Nothing was touched until the money was clear: what a free assessment covers, what a single written figure commits us to, how scored platters alter the sum, and the half payable up front once a drive must come apart. With a broken seal, none of that belongs in small print. His second question deserved the blunt answer — no one, this bench included, can judge the surfaces until the lid is off.
Free the heads, then read the last engineer's work
Nothing turned because the heads had settled onto the platters and gripped, locking the pack in place. Once they were lifted away, the surfaces went under magnification and the earlier visit signed its name: a donor stack whose part number disagreed with the label, a faint ring of old contact on the third surface, and debris no sealed mechanism should ever contain.
One continuous run, while it is still willing
Released, the drive spun and kept on spinning, so the whole capture went as one unbroken read with no power cycles risked. The bulk crossed quickly. The old scarred ring gave up next to nothing, which was the outcome he had been warned about.

Fifteen years of ceremony masters and most of the raw footage came home. One folder of early weddings lay across the scarred ring and would not read at all — five couples he has had to ring himself. He had been priced for that possibility, in writing, before he said yes.
