Without the jargon.
Healthy noise and a sudden absence is a pairing that points away from the platters. Mechanisms rehearse before they fail: copies drag, a new note creeps in, the drive letter comes and goes. A disappearance with no warning usually means the component that shows the disk to Windows has stopped working, and on a portable the bridge board tops that list. With two VAT returns and a set of year-end accounts due inside the fortnight, the gap between one diagnosis and another was the gap between a nuisance and losing clients, so the job went to the front.

What happened on the bench.
Disk out of the box the first morning, because the deadlines were real
The bare disk went on the bench within an hour of the parcel arriving, and it tested clean throughout: motor steady, firmware answering promptly, sample reads good under every head. That condemned the bridge board by elimination, and meant the image could start before lunch.
Let the WD board do its own decryption
The encryption on these units is held by the USB board, so a dead one cannot simply be thrown out. Its USB side had gone, but the board itself still replied on the bench, so it kept its place in the imaging path — and the volume opened as it always had.
Check against her diary, not our order
She sent through which returns fell due when, and the checking followed that list. The two VAT sets wanted that week were opened ledger by ledger and released ahead of the rest, which were verified behind them. A deadline cares only about the right folders, not all of them.
The outcome.
Every ledger came back, and both returns went in with a day to spare. Something else changed as well: her live client files now copy to a second drive before she shuts the laptop each evening.
