Bletchley is a town in its own right, under Milton Keynes City Council, a unitary authority with city status since 2022. It is two civil parishes — Bletchley and Fenny Stratford east of the West Coast Main Line, West Bletchley west of it — and the built-up area held 45,010 people at the 2021 census. Fenny Stratford, with Watling Street running through it, is its own place and not another word for Bletchley. Bletchley Park stands on Sherwood Drive in MK3; the National Museum of Computing shares that estate and is run separately. The working town is the Denbigh estates: light engineering, assembly and distribution, with Marshall Amplification among the employers there. That is where most of the drives come from — a production server holding drawings and test records, a haulier's office machine, a card out of a workshop camera. Switch it off, send it tracked to the Oxford lab, and the first look costs nothing.

Is there a counter in Bletchley?
No, and there is no van either. Media reaches us as a tracked, insured parcel from any post office or courier point in MK1, MK2 or MK3. Anyone who prefers to hand a drive over face to face can use the intake laboratory at Oxford Science Park, which takes weekday drop-off, 9am to 5:30pm. Either way, the return leg to Bletchley is paid at our end.
Our unit's server has stopped and the quality records sit on it. What happens first?
Leave it switched off. Take the disks out, number each one with the bay it came from, and send the lot, including any disk that had already dropped out. Nothing is written back to them: each disk is read-only imaged first, and the array comes back from those copies, so the original controller or cage is not needed. The free diagnosis comes first and tells you which files are still readable.
The office drive is the only copy. Should we keep trying it?
Stop now. A letting agent, a bookkeeper or a small clinic above the Queensway shops usually runs one machine and one plug-in drive, and every retry on a disk that is already failing costs a little more of what is still readable. Unplug it, pack it with padding on all sides, and put it in the post — the sooner it stops being powered, the more there is left to read.
